The bright side of shorter days 🍂

Hi Reader,

The Monty Python song, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, has been playing on a loop inside my head this week. I’m trying to remind myself of what I love about this time of year.

The clocks have changed, and it’s dark earlier, but that means I get to see a magnificent sunset from my studio window at about 4:30pm. The leaves are still beautiful colors, even if I do have to rake them from my garden. On my drive home in the dark, I catch the smell of woodsmoke. The mornings and evenings are chilly, but I get to wear my favorite cozy sweaters.

And all the colorful produce that filled the farm stand a few weeks ago has given way to the perfect ingredients for warm soup.

It’s a bit like living with loss but also enjoying what your next season has to offer.

What are you enjoying about this season?

New on the Blog

Seven years, thousands of handmade books, and one pretty amazing community! 🎉

In this post I'm looking back at where it all began and sharing seven lessons I've learned along the way.

Tip of the Week

Always check paper grain.

When making covers, make sure the grain of the cover material and endpapers runs parallel to the spine to prevent warping.

Book of the Week

We've fallen for this week's Book of the Week from Patricia Daloni! 🍂

The tree, the dreamy background, the little leaf details...there's so much to discover the longer you look at it.

Patricia, what a beautiful book! We just love all the little touches that make it yours.

Ali Shares

For this week's shares, I thought I would tell you about two books I've recently read and loved.

  • The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout follows a teacher whose ordinary life is unsettled by a chance incident. I loved its attention to everyday relationships and how life can feel changed while the familiar routines carry on.
  • A Family Matter by Claire Lynch follows a family living with the consequences of a separation decades earlier. What stayed with me was how quietly it tells their story—ordinary people carrying on with daily life, even as their understanding of the past shifts.

Warmly,
Ali & the VPD Team
