Hi Reader,
I feel like the universe is trying to keep me accountable. During my sabbatical, I dreamed up ideas and made plans, but the real takeaway from that time was a desire to slow down. I pledged to slow down not just by taking time off, but by reducing the pace of my days and being more mindful of how I fill them. I realized that I talk fast, eat fast, make fast, write fast, and 99% of the time, there’s no reason for the rush — everything important always gets done.
And then I came back to work, and apparently I hadn’t retained any of this wisdom. I began running around like a headless chicken again, a 2027 dry-erase calendar in one hand and markers in the other.
So, the universe tapped me on the shoulder and said, “I know how to slow you down — here’s a case of COVID.” After spending a wonderful week teaching in Minnesota, I was so sick I couldn’t function. Seven days later, it’s still lying me low with earache, a sore throat, and breathlessness (and yes, I’m vaccinated and boosted).
All that to say, I think the universe is having a good laugh at my expense. I’m on the mend now, but what a lesson in slowing down!

Use a ruler with a metal edge
When cutting with a craft knife, use a ruler with a metal edge whenever possible. Plastic rulers can get nicked by the blade, which can lead to wobbly cuts over time.
